Homework is typically assigned Monday through Thursday. The fifth graders are very rarely assigned weekend homework. They may have "make-up homework" over the weekend, but that would be for various reasons.
Each student should write down all homework assignments daily. (If the homework is posted, it will be posted on Google Classroom/G-Class, not here.)
NOTE: In our class, Google Classroom is often called "G-Class."

This May, Sacred Heart School in Mt. Holly, NJ is thrilled to be partnering with the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Military base for their innovative STARBASE program. Known to be an exciting and educational experience, each day will be filled
with "hands-on, minds-on" activities that are designed to spark our students' interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Students may discuss how chemical fires are extinguished, learn how the injured are transported, or explore the cockpit of an F-18 or interior of a submarine. Math is embedded throughout the curriculum and students use metric
measurement, estimation, calculation geometry, and data analysis to solve questions. Teamwork is stressed as they work together to explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate concepts.
“This is an incredible opportunity for our 5th graders to dive into the exciting world of science, technology, engineering, and math – in a truly hands-on way. STARBASE will spark their curiosity, challenge them with fun activities, and maybe even ignite a lifelong passion for STEM fields.” - Joanna Barlow, Sacred Heart School Principal
The Department of Defense (DoD) STARBASE program is a 12-month, year-round program, open to 5th grade students in Burlington and Ocean Counties. It provides 20-25 hours of STEM based opportunities where students will experience a wide variety of activities, including Newton's Laws of Motion, fluid mechanics, building blocks of matter, 3D Computer-Aided
Design, and more. The STARBASE Core Curriculum has 27 objectives that have been aligned with national standards. Participating students also have the opportunity to engage with military volunteers as positive role models and technological environments on base through tours and guest speakers.
Fifth grade teacher Mr. Botello shared, “Every student has already studied the history behind Naval call signs and has been assigned their own which matches either their personality or interest.” Our 5th grade is eager and excited for the program. Students commented, “I am most excited about STEM because I love engineering.” Another shared, “I am looking forward to the experiments and technology.,” Still another responded, “I can’t wait to learn about the base and the heroes who defend our country, keep us safe, and protect our freedoms.”
Mrs. Hopkins, Sacred Heart Middle School Science teacher expressed, “In Middle School, students are asked to begin applying their knowledge of scientific, engineering and STEM concepts. It is where they are asked to think, to apply and to extend their understanding of scientific concepts. Students participating in the STARBASE program are receiving a unique opportunity to participate in real practical applications of Science and STEM, specifically in the physical sciences and engineering, as well as learn about careers in the associated fields. Having this foundational knowledge prior to entering Middle School will give these students an exponential advantage and will allow them to dig deeper into scientific principles.”
No matter the reason, it’s easy to conclude why the troops from Sacred Heart School in Mt. Holly, NJ are counting down the days to their STARBASE experience.
All fifth graders will switch classes during third block* to receive science instruction from Mrs. MacNamara, the fourth-grade teacher. In addition, at that time, all fourth graders will come to my fifth-grade classroom to receive instruction in social studies.
BORED? Just take some cardboard you were going to recycle, add some duct tape, and then your imagination and...TADA!
This past July, some Sacred Heart School students enrolled in our "CardBORED" Club. The results of a large selection of cardboard, innumerable different colored duct tape, and a fantastic imagination will leave you in awe.
Learning is important. Developing Social Emotional Learning is important. How do you bring those together? MAKE IT FUN!!!
