During this Phase of learning at Sacred Heart, Grades PK-5th are receiving weekly Library sessions in their classrooms. Grades 6-8 will receive instruction as a special on a trimester basis (currently 6th & 7th grades have Library). I have become a travelling Librarian! Students in the classroom may choose a Library book from a selection of books on a Library cart. For remote students, please check with your child's teacher for connection information to the Library Google Classroom - there is a Book Request form that they may use to request a Library book. I truly miss having the students in the Library, but I am happy to have a safe way to get books to them!
Check out our newly updated Library Catalog! https://sacredheartschoolnj.booksys.net/opac/shs/ I am pleased to announce that the new version of our Library Catalog allows it to be searched from home! Students may also log in with their Library accounts to reserve a book to be delivered to them at their next Library class (or sent home if they are remote). If anyone needs their Library account, please contact me at library@sacred-heart-school.org.
About the Library Program
The Sacred Heart School Library serves as a resource and a place for learning and fun for students and faculty alike. It is my goal to foster a love of reading in every student. Students in PreK and Kindergarten enjoy a story time each week. Stories are chosen to fit the season, classroom subjects, and even just for fun!
In addition to reading stories or novels and library skills lessons, students in grades 1-8 have the opportunity each week to select a book to take home. All books are due back the following Library class, and may be renewed. Library skills for grades 1-5 are focused on learning more about how a Library is organized, searching a Library catalog, and the Dewey Decimal System. Grades 6-8 are honing their research skills and exploring different literary genres.
Open Library Time is available for Middle School Students on Wednesdays during the afternoon. As the students in grades 6-8 only have Library as a special for a Trimester, the Open Library Time gives them the opportunity to access the Library all year for research, study, or simply to check out books.
Note: Open Library Time is currently on hold - we hope to return to this in Phase 4.
Remember that our online reference tool
Scholastic Go! is always available for students who would like to explore it. Thanks to your generous support of our Scholastic book fairs, we were able to add the
Scholastic Go! package of online databases to our library research tools. To try this resource, select Scholastic Go! from the Library menu and click on the link. Passwords will be sent home with students when they have been shown the resource during their library class, or send me an e-mail if your student has lost their password, and I will be happy to send it to you.
