We have now begun learning cursive! Students will now have cursive homework a few times a week.
Book report forms went home on Monday, February 25th and are due back by March 25th. They are to be on poetry this month.
* Students may wear their gym uniforms on health days (Wednesdays) as we may have an extra gym class from time to time.
Spelling tests will be every Friday. You can find the words in the spelling homework notebook under "Unit 6 week 4"Homework:
Monday- Complete a Monday activity. Math- Chapter 8 test this Friday and practice double facts( i.e. 4+4= 8). Religion- chapter 25 quiz this Friday. Social Studies- Unit 3 test on Thursday.
Tuesday- Spelling- complete an activity under Tuesday's list (See below). Math- Practice skip counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's. Cursive- page 63.
Wednesday- Spelling- complete a Wednesday activity. *Sharpen 4 pencils Math- practice memorizing fact families and complete a fact family triangle. (See below). Social Studies- Unit 3 test tomorrow.
Thursday- Spelling- study for spelling test tomorrow. Practice writing all words, then use the SOS activity (see below) for words spelled incorrectly. All memory words will be on the test along with a few pattern words. Math- Chapter 8 test tomorrow & practice bringing any number up to the closest 10 and count how many hops it took to get there, using a number line or other method. (i.e. 26 to 30. It took 4 hops.) Cursive- page 59.
Friday- *Sharpen 4 pencils
Religion- chapter 26 quiz next Friday.

Spelling Homework:
Simultaneous Oral Spelling Activity (SOS):
This is to be done with any words that are spelled incorrectly.The student will say the name of each letter as it is written. As each letter is written, students are to also tap with the opposing hand (not the dominant hand) for each letter, starting with their pinky, moving in a left to right direction (or opposite, if left handed).For example, if the student misspells “lunch” and they are right handed, they would write and say “l” and tap their left pinky on the table, then “u” and tap their ring finger on the table and so on and so forth. Syllable-
has one vowel sound, can be long, short, or schwa,
and is one push of breath. There are six types of
syllables.
So far, we have reviewed all six of the syllable types:Open Syllable-
An open syllable is "open" because a single vowel is located at the end of a syllable, as in words like hi and go. When the syllable is open, the vowel makes the long vowel sound (it gets to say its name). Other examples- ba-sin, tri-pod, ra-cer. Ba, tri, and ra are all open syllables.

Consonant le Syllable-
This syllable is found at the end of a word.
To find this syllable, count back three. Consonant le is easy as 1-2-3! bottle, little, kettle

-ends in a silent e and the vowel is long. plane, safe, gate

Controlled R Syllable-
Has at least one vowel followed by r.

*A dipthong is a type of vowel team, but the mouth changes position as it produces the sound. Oi, oy, aw, au, and ou as in out, are just a few examples.

Please choose and complete one activity using your spelling list for this week. Choose a different activity each week.

Type your Spelling list on the computer 3 times (no cut and paste please). Use a different font and color for each list. Print it out to show me.

Find your list words in a newspaper or magazine. Cut and paste them onto a piece of paper to make a collage. You may decorate your collage.

Write list words 2 times each-first in all upper case letters, then in all lower case letters.

Syllabication- please divide 5 of your memory words and 5 of your pattern words into syllables and write down the number of syllables for each word. If possible, please mark your vowels with a macron for long ( ā ), a breve for short ( ă ), a line over the letter to show that it is silent, or an (ə) to show a schwa.
example- lable= lā / blɇ 2 action= ăc / tion 2
*Please copy the following rules into your spelling notebook:1. The -S or -ES rule- When a nouns ends in ch, sh, s, ss, x, or z, add -es to make the word plural. Most other nouns are changed to the plural form by adding -s. Our Mnemonic trick is "Charlie's shoes swim and floss in a box with a zebra".
2. Y to i rule- When a word ends in a consonant directly before y, change the y to i and add the suffix. For example, cry + es = cries and cry + ed = cried. *Do not change the y to i before the suffix -ing as in crying.
