Curriculum

- As a Catholic school in the Diocese of Trenton, we follow the curriculum set by our Office of Catholic Schools, which are correlated to the NJ State Standards. We work hard as a faculty and staff to find ways to make our diocesan curriculum come alive at Sacred Heart and challenge each and every learner in our school.
  
  Sacred Heart School strives every day to be authentically Catholic and academically excellent. As a PreK-8 school, we have the privilege of forming children in faith and reason from early childhood to the early teen years. Our variety of program accommodates for all types of learners.

- Elementary Program (Kindergarten - Grade 3)
  Foundations & Fundamentals for Lifetime Learners
  
  Elementary (K-3) Overview:
  
  Beginning with an appreciation of God as Creator, our students become familiar with the Bible, simple prayers and a variety of Church celebrations throughout the liturgical year.
  
  2nd Grade students prepare for the sacramentsof Reconciliation and First Communion as they learn about the saints and the structure of the Mass.
  
  3rd Grade students learn about the Church as a prayerful, caring and ministering community.
  
  A well-rounded, Integrated Language Arts curriculum emphasizing:
  
  Reading, writing, speaking and listening skills
  
  Phonics, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, comprehension
  
  Penmanship and cursive writing
  
  Mathematics including:
  
  Addition, subtraction, time, place values, properties of operation, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, problem solving
  
  Hands on Science teaching:
  
  life, physical, and earth sciences as well as the human body
  
  Social Studies-history, geography, economics, and civics from a global and diverse perspective
- Intermediate Program (Grades 4 & 5)
  Building on strong foundations

  Religious Education studies include a study of the Commandments and an appreciation of sacramental life of the Church
  
  Integrated Language Arts - concentrates on vocabulary development, comprehension and critical thinking skills

  Religion - Students will take time for self-reflection and personal growth as they prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation
  
  learning about the biblical life of Jesus Christ
  
  Diocesan Family life curriculum including respect for life, social living and family relationships
  
  A Classical approach to Integrated Language Arts:
  
  Reading of classic literature and Informational Texts including writings of the church
  
  Writing, listening and speaking skills with a focus on grammar, and clear communication
  
  Advanced Mathematics:
  
  Conitinuing to focus on basic and complex math applications
  
  Developing analytical and critical thinking skills
  
  Readying students for Algebra by 8th grade
  
  Science -exposure to the fundamental principles of Earth science, chemistry, biology, and physics:
  
  Using supervised hands-on learning experiences as a complement to informational text

Religious Studies

In addition to the academic programs described, all students receive religious education instruction every day. Each grade level develops and presents a mass thoughout the course of the year. Students participate in annual paralitugical celebrations such as blessing of throats, lighting of Advent wreaths and the distribution of ashes and Stations of the Cross along with the opportunities for the reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Enrichment Classes

At Sacred Heart School, students from Preschool through Grade 8 receive a well-rounded curriculum with a full range of Enrichment Classes including, Library, Music, Art, Spanish and Physical Education.
